Google Gemini CLI Open Source AI Coding Assistant Agent
Google just released Gemini CLI, a command-line AI tool that’s ready to shake up how developers interact with their terminals. This open-source gem plugs the smarts of Gemini 2.5 Pro right into your command line, blending coding, research, and automation into one smooth package.

Gemini CLI is made for devs who treat the terminal like home base. Forget bouncing to a browser or IDE—this tool lives right in your shell. Powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro, Google’s beefy multimodal model with a 1-million-token context window, it tackles everything from whipping up code to debugging, tweaking files, or even spinning out content. Google calls it “a handy local sidekick for all sorts of tasks, from cranking out code and solving problems to digging deep into research or juggling projects.”

Its tight integration with the terminal is the real magic. You can fire off plain-English commands to churn out code, unpack tricky scripts, or streamline workflows without ever leaving your shell. For example, type gemini > Write a Python script to parse a CSV file or gemini > Summarize yesterday’s git commits, and it spits out answers fast, rooted in your local codebase.

Dropped under the Apache 2.0 license, Gemini CLI is wide open for devs to poke around in. You can check out the code, add features, or flag bugs on its GitHub repo (github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli). This transparency lets teams vet the tool for security before rolling it out. Google’s all in on community vibes, saying they’re stoked for devs worldwide to jump in with bug reports, feature ideas, security tweaks, or code upgrades.

For solo devs with a personal Google account, Gemini CLI is free, coming with a Gemini Code Assist license that allows 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 per day. Google says that’s about double what most devs need, so you’re unlikely to hit the limit. Compared to other tools’ stingy free tiers, this is a big win for students, freelancers, or hobbyists.

Pros needing more juice can tap usage-based billing through Google AI Studio or Vertex AI, or level up to Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licenses. Ryan J. Salva, Google’s Senior Director of Product Management, put it plain: “We don’t want you stressing over a token meter like it’s a taxi fare, holding back your ideas.”

Coding’s its sweet spot, but Gemini CLI stretches way beyond. It can whip up content, do research, or handle tasks—all from the terminal. Need a slide deck summing up your git history? Just type the prompt. Want to batch-convert images to PNGs based on EXIF data? It’s got you covered.
