AI Generative Art Vending Machine

Niklas Roy’s generative art vending machine, called ‘Generative Art 1€’, works exactly as it sounds. You put in a euro coin and then a generative algorithm begins to continuously draw an animated black line on a screen, offering an endless stream of potential artworks.

Each one of these unique masterpieces exist in a transient digital state until someone intervenes by spending a coin. Why so little? Well, the artist says that by pricing each artwork at just one euro, the installation aims to question the intrinsic value of machine-generated art, while also democratizing their consumption and collection by making them affordable to all. You can try it out in person by visiting the “Intelligence, it’s automatic” booth at Zebrastraat in Gent, Belgium until June 8th.

Each interaction with the installation produces a different result, as no two drawings are identical. The uniqueness stems from the algorithm’s use of the UNIX/Epoch time as a seed variable. This ensures that every interaction with the installation creates a distinct piece,” said Roy.
