Archival footage specialist NASS used artificial intelligence to upscale and colorize several scenes of New York City from the 1930s and 1940s. We get a glimpse of downtown and the exit of a train station with many people living their daily lives, wearing clothing that you typically don’t see today.
The footage also includes a long train ride through New York City, showing many buildings and structures that are long gone. AI was used to boost the scenes to 60 fps, HD resolution with increased sharpness as well as brightness, colorization, and sound for ambience. The original footage was sourced from the US Archive National and had to be partially restored including stabilization, denoising, and deblurring. What some may not realize is that The Great Depression was an ongoing issue during the 1930s, with thousands building makeshift huts in the parks or in alleyways after being evicted from their homes.
