Just when you thought regular hummingbirds were small, the bee hummingbird comes around. It’s currently the world’s smallest bird and can be found in Cuba as well as the Isla de la Juventud. Females weigh just 2.6 g and are 2.4 in long, making them slightly larger than the males, with an average weight of 1.95 g. The brilliant, iridescent colors of the bee hummingbird’s feathers make them look like tiny jewels.

The bee hummingbird feeds mainly on nectar, and occasionally insects, by moving its tongue rapidly in / out of its mouth. The process of feeding involves the bird picking up pollen on its bill and head. When it travels between flowers, the pollen is transferred, thus giving it the important role in plant reproduction. In a single day, the bee hummingbird may visit up to 1,500 flowers.
