Google Pixel 10a Smartphone Launch
The Google Pixel 10a has finally arrived, all for the very inexpensive price of $499, and it delivers a fairly decent package that is surprisingly complete for the price. Pre-orders are open immediately, with the first smartphones arriving in users’ hands on March 5th.

Out of the box, you get a nice 6.3-inch pOLED display with a decent 1080 x 2424 resolution, as well as a snazzy variable refresh rate that’ll smoothly scroll and give your touch inputs a nice responsive feel when you need it, which is 60Hz to 120Hz if you need the specifics. Good news: the screen now packs a punch, with up to 3000 nits peak brightness and 2000 nits for HDR material, a significant improvement over the Pixel 9a’s prior restrictions, so your outdoor visibility will be much better on bright days. Google has applied Corning Gorilla Glass 7i to cover the screen, providing the phone higher scratch resistance than its predecessors. It feels good in the hand, measuring 6.1 inches tall, 2.9 inches broad, and 0.4 inches thick for a weight of just under 6.5 ounces. They’ve flattened the camera array so it rests flush with the back of the phone rather than protruding out as before, which should give it a cleaner and more modern appearance. There are four color options to select from: Obsidian (your classic black), Berry (which appears to be more red-toned to us), Fog (a neutral white-ish option), and Lavender (a nice deep purple).

The Pixel 10a is powered by the Tensor G4 CPU, which was also used in last year’s flagship models, and it comes with 8GB of RAM. Storage options include 128GB or 256GB (no expansion slot), and from what we’ve seen, it handles all of the normal tasks with ease, including surfing, streaming, and light gaming. Battery life should also be adequate, with a huge 5100mAh pack providing more than 30 hours of average use or up to 120 hours if you’re particularly frugal with battery life. Charging reaches a decent 30W wired, with Google’s 45W charger offered separately, and 10W wireless. That represents a slight improvement over the previous generation.

The cameras, on the other hand, are just as good as you’d expect, with a 48MP main sensor with optical image stabilisation and a 13MP ultra-wide lens at the back, and a great 13MP front camera for selfies and video chats. However, the software is what truly makes the difference here. Auto Best Take, for example, scans a group photo and merges the best expressions into a single joyful image. Camera Coach seeks to provide real-time guidance on lighting, framing, and other related topics as you’re lining up a photo, utilizing the Gemini AI to help you along the way. Macro Focus does an excellent job of capturing all of those close-up details, not to mention all of the other familiar tools like Add Me (stick yourself into group photos later), Audio Magic Eraser (remove background noise in your videos), and Reimagine (alter photo elements with text prompts). To top it off, it all works really well on the Tensor G4, giving results that can easily compete with those more expensive phones.

AI extends far beyond the camera, as Gemini Live allows you to hold real conversations, complete with screensharing or simply pointing the camera to something to receive quick responses. Press and hold the home button, and Circle to Search will identify items, translate text, and pull up a variety of valuable information from any screen. Magic Compose helps by proposing responses or rephrasing your messages in different tones. Then there’s Pixel Weather, which provides a short overview of the day, all generated right on the phone itself. When it comes to calls, you can use Call Screen to deal with unknown callers, Hold for Me to avoid listening to interminable hold music, Direct My Call to browse menus, and Clear Calling to cut through background noise. Some of the more advanced features from the Pixel 10 are missing, but the fundamentals are dead on and function exceptionally well.

It all runs on Android 16, and Google pledges to keep the software up to date and secure for the next seven years. The phone’s build quality is also quite sturdy; IP68 dust and water resistance means it can withstand a few bumps and filth without blinking an eye. If you find yourself stranded in a dead zone, satellite connectivity provides you with backup SMS choices.

The Pixel 10a starts at $499 (256GB costs $599). That puts it right up against Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17e (or so we’ve heard), and it really outperforms some of the mid-range competition on pricing. Furthermore, the pre-order discounts appear to be rather appealing, with trade-in credits worth up to $450 or $550 available, as well as a free pair of Pixel Buds 2 or a store credit. Google sees this as the smart pick for anyone who values clean software, good photography, a long-lasting battery, and some useful AI features, all without breaking the wallet.
