On October 31, a Category 4 typhoon known as Kalmaegi devastated Cebu. By sunrise, the entire neighborhood was submerged in a murky brown slurry that smelled like a mix of diesel fumes and raw sewage. That neighborhood was home to a person who posts on Reddit under the username “bricksandcanvas”; he’d lost his house, his furniture, and, most importantly, almost his life. But three days later, he was able to dig out his iPhone 17 Pro Max from the dirt, and it was still functional.

The flash flood came at 4:03am on the dot, no warning at all, water was oozing in under the front door then suddenly it surged. in 2 minutes it was up to his ankles. 5 minutes later it had swallowed the couch whole. He bailed upstairs grabbed his cat and hauled himself up to the roof. At the same time his iPhone slipped from his hand and vanished in the torrent – he watched it spinning away like a little silver leaf.

He held on for 15 minutes until regaining control. Afterwards, he was too injured to go back immediately, but once recovered, he spent three days scouring the debris. Then, on the third afternoon, he noticed a recognizable shape half-buried in the debris. He removed the mud with his fingertips. The screen was dark, the ports were clogged, and the titanium edges had become quite dirty from the grit.

He took it to his hotel (or a friend / relative’s home) and plugged it in, waiting to see what happened. The Apple logo appeared, and no cracks or scratches could be found on the phone’s casing. The cameras also appeared to be as clear as day. Unfortunately, his MacBook Pro M4 wasn’t so lucky, as that was submerged in the flood waters after it was left on the couch.
You know what. While I was still recovering, I was a 100% sure that my phone was okay. It has been a couple of days that it was submerged and even in mud too but I still had this gut feeling that it was and I was right. Great engineering and design, really,” said bricksandcanvas.
