Kristina Dutton’s ‘Nanoscapes’ short film shows what butterfly wings look like under an electron microscope at up to 50,000x magnification. Butterfly wings are basically made of chitin, a fibrous substance that’s also found in the exoskeletons of most insects, and scales.
What you’ll notice right off the bat are the tiny overlapping pieces of chitin that cover the wings of butterflies, while scales give them their unique colors and patterns. These colorful scales also serve other purposes such as absorbing sunlight, helping them fly, and insulating the butterfly’s body because they’re filled with air. Does chitin sound familiar?
