You’ve seen 8-bit Google Maps, now check out Linus Åkesson’s The Family Bass, a functional instrument made from a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and a 72-key Family BASIC keyboard. First, he had to create a ROM image program that allowed you to select a note with the D-pad of a controller, and then press a button to play it.
He discovered that a controller was not the most efficient interface, which is why the keyboard came into play. All that was required to use this keyboard is an ATtiny85 microcontroller to receive as well interpret the signals generated by the keyboard, and then turning this data into controller inputs that can be interpreted by the custom software.
