Nintendo released Super Mario World in Japan on November 21, 1990, which makes it exactly 1-billion seconds old today. For those who never owned a Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Super Mario World was actually the very first Mario game for the console and designed to showcase its technical features. This meant that the development team had more freedom compared to the series installments for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

How did Super Mario World take advantage of the console’s hardware? Well, it’s essentially a 2D side-scrolling platform game in which the player controls Mario or Luigi with similar gameplay to earlier games, but adds new elements such as dashing as well as floating using the Cape Feather. Plus, this installment let players “store” an extra power-up in a box at the top center of the screen. Even more significant was the introduction of Yoshi, a dinosaur companion that Mario an ride and use to eat most enemies. In somewhat related news, a NASA engineer built a ‘Dominator’ robot to create a 100,000 domino Super Mario Bros. mural.
