Samsung Electronics officially revealed its latest mobile processor today, the Exynos 2200. This is their first mobile processor that comes equipped with an AMD RDNA 2 architecture-based Samsung Xclipse graphics processing unit (GPU). What is the Xclipse GPU? It’s a bespoke hybrid graphic processor located between the console and the mobile graphic processor, which is set to usher in a new chapter of mobile gaming. Read more for an intro video and additional information.
Thanks to AMD’s high-performance DNA 2 architecture, the Xclipse GPU is capable of hardware accelerated ray tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS) that were previously only available on PCs, laptops and consoles. You read that right, mobile games can now have ray-tracing enabled, which closely simulates how light physically behaves in the real world. It’s also the first ever hardware-accelerated ray tracing on a mobile graphics processing unit. The octa-core CPU of Samsung’s Exynos 2200 is designed in a tri-cluster structure consisting of a single powerful Arm Cortex-X2 flagship-core, three performance and efficiency balanced Cortex-A710 big-cores and four power-efficient Cortex-A510 little-cores. When can you expect to see this processor in a device? Most likely Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S22, set for release at the end of February.
