Another day, another patent filing for something interesting, and this time, it’s from Sony, not Samsung. This patent for a flexible display with embedded sensors was filed on March 4, 2019 and published on June 27, 2019. This flexible display sports at least three sensors; a pressure sensor, temperature sensor and an acceleration sensor. A photo sensor and a resistance sensor can be added later by the user should the Xperia smartphone boast a modular design. Read more for the patent and another picture.

These sensors embedded in the flexible display can detect whether the user is holding the smartphone and the position it’s in. They also help determine which part of the screen is being viewed, so that the interface can be automatically adjusted, in order to provide an optimal user experience. A still image or a moving image in the form of a screen saver can be displayed on the, always-on, non-visual sectionn, thus the refresh rate of that part of the screen can be limited to save power.
