Sony FX2 Compact Camera
Sony’s new FX2 camera is shaking things up in a world where smartphones have nearly killed off point-and-shoots, slotting into Sony’s Cinema Line as a dream tool for filmmakers, vloggers, and lone creators chasing flexibility.

Driving the FX2 is a 33-megapixel full-frame Exmor R sensor, a powerhouse that snaps jaw-dropping detail and vivid colors. Full-frame sensors are larger than those in most compact cameras, letting in more light for richer images, especially in dim settings. “The FX2 offers a seamless entry point into our Cinema Line, giving creators cinematic expression in a versatile package,” says Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics. Boasting over 15 stops of dynamic range, it tackles blazing highlights and inky shadows with finesse, while Dual Base ISO (800 and 4000) shines whether you’re filming under scorching sun or dim streetlights, with video sensitivity reaching a stellar ISO 102400.

The FX2 shoots 4K video at 60fps in 10-bit 4:2:2 color, serving up buttery motion and lush tones that rival pro rigs, with Log modes like Cine EI and Flexible ISO for post-production color tweaks, plus S-Cinetone’s default cinematic vibe for natural skin tones and instant filmic flair. You can load up to 16 custom LUTs for real-time color previews, ensuring your on-set vision holds true to the final cut. “Our goal was to empower independent creators and small crews with tools that don’t compromise on quality,” Cheng notes.

Ever struggle to keep a moving subject in focus? The FX2’s Real-time Recognition AF, powered by AI, locks onto faces, eyes, or objects with uncanny precision. Whether you’re filming a sprinting dog or a talking head, it keeps things sharp. The Auto Framing feature is a standout, automatically adjusting the frame to keep your subject centered—perfect for solo vloggers who can’t monitor the shot themselves. There’s also a Framing Stabilizer to smooth out shaky footage, a boon for handheld shooting. Social media has praised this system, with Visual_ImpactUK noting the “Fast Hybrid AF with AI-assisted features” as a game-changer for dynamic shoots.

Weighing in at a svelte 1.4 pounds (body only), the FX2 inherits the flat-top design of its Cinema Line siblings, the FX3 and FX30. It’s small enough to sling in a backpack yet tough, with built-in mounts for mics or lights—no clunky cage needed—and a tilting electronic viewfinder, a rare gem for compact cameras, keeps your framing sharp even in glaring sunlight. “Some filmmakers really need a viewfinder, and this gives the FX2 a great out-of-the-box selling point,” says Andrea Pizzini of Sony Alpha Rumors. The camera also boasts XLR audio inputs for professional-grade sound, and rumors suggest it supports 32-bit float audio.

Shaky footage can ruin a great shot, but the FX2’s in-body image stabilization (IBIS) with Active Dynamic Mode keeps things steady, even when you’re walking and talking. This pairs with the camera’s compatibility with Sony’s high-capacity batteries, offering up to 530 shots per charge when using the LCD screen, based on similar models like the A7R V. For video, expect around 90 minutes of continuous 4K recording, though a cooling fan ensures you won’t overheat during long takes.

The FX2 stays ready with dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots to keep your storage worries at bay, plus speedy Wi-Fi for zipping files to your phone or laptop—perfect for creators posting on the fly. An HDMI output hooks up to external monitors or recorders, giving you room to scale up for bigger shoots.

The Sony FX2 will be available in early August 2025 for a suggested retail price of $2,699.99 USD and $3,499.99 CAD for the body only, or $3,099.99 USD and $3,999.99 CAD with the XLR handle.
