Elon Musk announced today during the Tesla Q4 earnings call that unsupervised Full Self Driving (FSD) is coming to Austin, Texas in June 2025 as a paid service. Tesla aims to expand this service to several other cities by the end of this year, but the company needs to collect enough data to ensure that the probability of injury is low.
Since this points to a beta launch in just Austin, rather than the entire state of Texas, the paid service will most likely be a geofenced autonomous ride-hailing test. Think of it as what Waymo is doing with their driverless cars, but with Tesla vehicles instead. The company’s goal is for Tesla vehicles to achieve miles between necessary disengagement equivalent to human miles driven between collisions, which NHTSA stes at 670,000 miles.
