Toyota Corolla Hydrogen Combustion Engine Race Car
H/t: Jalopnik
Toyota’s experimental Corolla race car is powered by a hydrogen combustion-engine and its sound may surprise you. In a recent video by Toyota Times, you can hear it drive off and onto a track, with no signs of it being a zero-emissions car. Those who have driven it claim that the Corolla drives just like a gasoline-powered model. What sets this apart from the Mirai as well as other hydrogen vehicles? It’s not powered by a fuel cell, but rather a turbocharged three-cylinder engine that uses hydrogen instead of gasoline.

This prototype obtains its fuel from the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field, a location that makes use of large solar panel arrays to produce the fuel. Next, this Toyota Corolla will head to Fuji International Speedway in the foothills of Mount Fuji in Oyama, Suntō District, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan next month. There’s no word yet on if a similar vehicle will make it into production.

We want to attempt to demonstrate that [internal combustion] engines can be useful in achieving carbon neutrality, and we want to turn them into a platform that mechanics and private garages, which support motorsports, can use in the future,” said Akio Toyoda, President of the Toyota Motor Corporation.
