Helicopter pilot Bret Hutchings discovered a bizarre monolith in the Utah desert that looks to be straight from 2001: A Space Odyssey. After spotting this structure in the middle of nowhere, the crew landed to take a closer look, and even stood atop each other’s shoulders to reach the top of it. Standing between 10ft and 12ft tall, the monolith appeared to be securely fastened to the ground and made from some sort of metal. Read more for a video and additional information.

Since bighorn sheep reside in Utah’s most rugged and remote areas, capable of surviving hostile climate conditions, the crew have not yet revealed its exact location since amateur explorers might get stuck in the wilderness exploring. As of now, there is still no word yet on if an artist is behind this installation.

One of the biologists is the one who spotted it and we just happened to fly directly over the top of it. He was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!’ And I was like, ‘What?’ And he’s like, ‘There’s this thing back there – we’ve got to go look at it!’ I’m assuming it’s some new wave artist or something or, you know, somebody that was a big 2001: A Space Odyssey fan,” said Hutchings.
