Although ice spheres aren’t as exciting as this first-person view of a waterfall, they are fascinating nonetheless. BC Wanderer spotted this natural phenomenon while hiking and captured a short clip showing just how many you can find in one of these small pools of icy water.
Why does this happen? There’s a pool of icy water at the bottom of waterfalls like this one where the liquid freezes and forms chunks of ice that floats at the top. Water falling then spins this ice, eventually forming a sphere-like shape. The reason why these spheres are so smooth is similar to what happens to wood on a lathe, as in the ice chunks grows as more water freezes, subsequently causing it to get more round. If this phenomenon occurs in a river, ice pancakes form.
