LG Electronics published a USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) patent on April 9, 2019, with the title ‘Mobile Terminal’. This device appears to be a foldable smartphone that sports a flexible transparent display. It appears to be all-screen, as the flexible display can be used on both the front / back and the inside, while a simple movement turns it into a tablet. The phone also features a near bezel-less design that may use a different transparent material.
The transparent foldable form factor laid out in LG’s new patent is notable for one other reason: the hinge. A large section of the accompanying imagery is dedicated to the hinge, which is more complex than you think. Other companies, such as TCL and Huawei, have also been highly secretive about their hinge technology, and it does appear like the mechanics of the actual folding as well as unfolding will be a point of differentiation when foldable devices do eventually become a reality.
