Another day, another Midjourney-like AI, and this time, it’s MarioGPT. Developed by programmers from the IT University of Copenhagen, this AI model is based on GPT-2 and capable of interpreting user requests into graphical representations of Super Mario Bros. levels purely from text prompts.
Achieving this action required some Python code to help the language model understand what needed to be done before it could be trained using samples from the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. After interpreting the text prompt, MarioGPT then generates a new level of the game, with nearly unlimited possibilities, including “many pipes, many enemies, little blocks, low elevation” and “no pipes, no enemies, many blocks”.

We also combine MarioGPT with novelty search, enabling it to generate diverse levels with varying play-style dynamics (i.e. player paths). This combination allows for the open-ended generation of an increasingly diverse range of content,” said the researchers.
