Scuba Diver Giant Pacific Octopus Cambell River
Scuba diver Andrea Humphrey is no stranger to aquatic life, but her most recent encounter with a giant Pacific octopus was unexpected to say the least. It happened in the 3-meter (9.8-foot) water off Vancouver’s Campbell River and as she went in for photos, the creature just started crawling closer for a friendly greeting.

This basketball-sized octopus had tentacles as deep as the water, and the hug itself fully engulfed the camera as you can see in the footage. Those tentacles tried to feel Humphrey’s face, even getting near her mouth and lips, before going in for the big hug. It’s rare that the giant Pacific octopus, touted as a highly intelligent cephalopod, interacts with divers in any scenario, making this encounter even more special.

I’ve been diving for 12 years. I have never had that. It was just mind-blowing, and it was so incredible. So, our goal was to find that person an octopus and we geared up and got in the water. And within three minutes, I found this octopus that was just sitting there, out in the open,” said Humphreys.
